Breathe easier, Toronto, your lungs are well cared for. Toronto East General Hospital (TEGH) is a pillar of Toronto’s health care network, serving a diverse community in the heart of Canada’s largest city. Adding to the long list of awards and accreditations the hospital has received over the years, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has designated TEGH as a provincial Centre of Excellence in the field of thoracic surgery.

Thoracic surgery, which covers surgeries of the lung, chest, and esophagus, is a vital intervention in lung and other cancers. As a regional Centre of Excellence, TEGH performs thoracic surgery for Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, North York General and as far north as Barrie. TEGH has developed a unique “Time to Treat” model of care which has successfully reduced the average time from first suspicion of illness until treatment by over 70 percent in the case of lung cancer by, among other things, fast-tracking key diagnostic tests and ensuring that patients have a single point of referral for all appointments in the hospital. This life-saving program has become the standard of care across Ontario and now is serving as a care model for other cancers as well.

With donor support, Toronto East General Hospital is planning to establish a new state-of-the-art Lung Centre, further improving the quality of life and standard of care for all patients with chest disease in the GTA and beyond. The Lung Centre will combine the expertise of the hospital’s thoracic surgery and respiratory services in a single physical space within the new Ken and Marilyn Thomson Patient Care Centre, to be built at the corner of Coxwell and Sammon, as part of the hospital’s transformational redevelopment project.
